Good Thursday morning. Here are some of the stories making news in Washington and politics today.

  • As Trump administration officials try to convince allies that the United States remains committed to the fight against the Islamic State in Syria, they are facing a significant roadblock: the uncertainty of Mr. Trump's own policies.
  • On Wednesday, Mr. Trump seemed unbothered by Turkey's invasion of northern Syria when he gave Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a warm welcome at the White House, offering little sign of frustration with Mr. Erdogan over an incursion that scrambled American foreign policy.
  • The Federal Reserve chair painted an optimistic picture of the United States economy before Congress on Wednesday, though he warned that threats remain.

Today's On Politics briefing was compiled by Isabella Grullón Paz in New York.
